A Statesboro Crew Working Lyons Ground

Watson Outdoor Living does land clearing in Lyons, Georgia, about 46 miles from our base in Statesboro. We run I-16 west, come through Metter, then take GA 152 into Lyons. The town began around 1890 as a depot on the Central of Georgia Railway. Named for Mr. Lyons, a railroad official, it was incorporated on December 9, 1897. Toombs County was formed in 1905 as Georgia's 144th county, named for Robert Toombs. Lyons became the county seat that same year, and the former Toombs County Courthouse still stands in town. The city sits where U.S. 1 meets U.S. 280, and it held 4,239 people at the 2020 census.

U.S. 280 runs through the city as West Liberty Avenue, and Vidalia lies six miles west. Headed southeast, the same highway reaches Reidsville in 15 miles. U.S. 1 runs through the center of town and heads north 12 miles to Oak Park, just short of I-16. GA 152, 178 and 292 also pass through Lyons. The north half of Toombs County, centered on Lyons, drains to the Ohoopee River. Off those roads, we clear house lots, field edges, timber tracts and fence lines. Estimates are free and come after we look at the land in person, so call or text (912) 712-6034.

What farm and timber ground do you clear around Lyons?

Toombs County had 296 farms on 69,898 acres at the 2022 Census of Agriculture. Woodland made up about a third of that farmland. In those 23,918 acres of farm woods, forestry mulching clears the underbrush and leaves the timber you want. Our CAT 275 track loader runs the mulcher head, and the chips stay on the ground to hold the dirt.

County farms also held 7,259 cattle and calves at the end of 2022. On the 11,252 acres of pasture, brush clearing with the root rake grapple opens fence lines back up. Cotton led the county's crops in 2022 at 5,901 acres, and hay ground took 3,995. Field edges along the county's 29,533 acres of cropland get the same work.

How do you get a homesite in Lyons ready to build?

Lyons sits about 240 feet above sea level, on the Ohoopee side of the county. The 119-mile Ohoopee joins the Altamaha 13 miles south of Reidsville. The county's south half, out to State Route 147, drains to the Altamaha River instead. Water covers 7 of Toombs County's 371 square miles. Before any dirt work on a house pad, we check which way your lot sheds water.

Lyons had 1,914 housing units at the 2020 census, and each new house needs a clean pad. Stump removal near a house means the CAT 308 lifts out each stump and root ball for the dump trailer. That leaves firm dirt under a slab or a driveway off U.S. 1 or U.S. 280. Where the pad sits low, fill goes in and the track loader shapes it to shed rain.

Truly one of the best young men I’ve worked with. Him and his team exceeded my expectations. I’ve had them come for landscaping and debris removal, and each time I’m pleased. I recommended him to a few co-workers of mine and they consistently thought the pricing was reasonable.

What does land clearing cost in Lyons?
Cost comes down to the acreage and how thick the growth is. Woods take longer than open ground, and about a third of Toombs County farmland is woodland. Low ground in the Ohoopee River drainage can stay wet after rain and slow the machines. Every estimate is free and comes after we see your land in person.
How far is Lyons from your base in Statesboro?
Lyons is about 46 miles from our Statesboro base, a little over an hour by car. We take U.S. 301 north to I-16, then run 11.6 miles west to Metter. There we pick up GA 23/121 on South Lewis Street. GA 152 then carries us the last 13.3 miles into Lyons.
Which Toombs County communities around Lyons do you cover?
We take work across Toombs County and its 364 square miles of land. That includes Santa Claus, a city of 204 people just off U.S. 1 south of Lyons. It also takes in Grays Landing, Johnson Corner, English Eddy and McNatt Falls. Call or text (912) 712-6034 and tell us where your land sits.
